Profile

State Research and Design Institute for Urban Development of the City of Moscow is a state organization specialized in Architecture, Engineering Infrastructure, Transportation, Economics, and Social Sciences. Established in 2012 under the Moscow City Government Order it subordinates directly to the Moscow City Architecture Committee. The Institute develops and implements strategies for sustainable urban planning including analysis of environmental and socioeconomic aspects of urban development.

Modern city demands a new approach towards development of urban space. The city of Moscow strives to encompass new principles of urban design and planning in elaboration of large-scale design and renewal projects. The Institute commits to multi-disciplinary strategical approach in master planning and works towards development of livable, sustainable communities and improvement of citizens’ wellbeing by working with all stakeholders of urban planning process.

   Fields of work

     1.  Architecture

Department of Architecture works on development of complex urban planning projects, land management, green landscapes and spatial design concepts, sustainable urban forms, compact developments with high urban density and reduced land use. The department creates area planning designs, waterfront redevelopment concepts, land surveys, and demarcations of urban space using information modeling technologies and geospatial data analysis. It determines optimal conditions for visual perception of cultural heritage objects and interaction of project design with the urban environment by performing visual landscape analysis to assure social and spatial cohesion and land use diversity.

2. Economics

Department of Economics works on socioeconomic efficiency of urban space and urban planning decisions. It evaluates feasibility of the urban development projects using methodological assessment and economic analysis providing evidence base and justification for investment into construction and development projects.

3. Transportation

Department of Transportation consists of Transportation Workshop and Transport Infrastructure and Modeling group.

Transportation Workshop group works on traffic and road network organization in the city of Moscow and its agglomeration. Complex planning projects intended for construction and redevelopment of road network elements, public transportation hubs, and parking facilities are carried out in the workshop. The group facilitates transportation network design of the site planning aiming towards transit-oriented development, and sustainable walkability.

Transport Infrastructure and Modeling group works on macroscopic and microscopic modeling of traffic flows and development of multimodal transportation and mobility system of Moscow and its agglomeration for the goals of sustainable road network organization. The group develops recommendations on ways to reduce traffic congestion and increase transport mobility. The group also conducts scientific and research works in the subject of transportation planning and modeling.

 4.  Ecology

Department of Ecology works on ecological impact assessment of the project development activities. It performs dendrological analysis, air pollution modeling, and acoustic exposure assessment. The group conducts instrumental control of analysis and modeling results. It also performs assessments of perspective environmental state in correlation with the urban planning decisions.

  5.  Engineering Infrastructure

Department of Engineering Infrastructure works on provision of engineering communications such as water supply, heating, drainage, gas supply, electricity, and telephone communications in various construction and development projects in Moscow.

The work of the department consists of two stages. First stage is the analysis of current state of engineering infrastructure at a certain parcel of land. At this stage, level of utility provision by engineering networks and facilities is assessed, as well as the location of technical zones and reserve capacity in the areas of urban development. At the second stage, proposals for the development of engineering infrastructure systems are prepared based on the location and technical characteristics of the construction site.

  6. Social Infrastructure

Department of Social Infrastructure works on evaluation of social infrastructure facilities in the areas of new urban development. It develops proposals for the development of educational and health facilities such as schools, kindergartens, hospitals, cultural centers, commercial buildings, sports and recreational centers by applying methods of statistical analysis and population prognosis in different neighborhoods of Moscow for a 20-year perspective.
